L. van Leyden
The long awaited new catalogue of the engravings and woodcuts by Lucas van Leyden, one of the major printmakers of all time. The compiler, former head of the print department of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, has devoted many years to the study of Lucas van Leyden. The result is a catalogue in which the impressions traced have been classified according to criteria of quality in a way similar to Meder's Der catalogue. Detailed study of the watermarks has enabled the distinction between various editions pulled during the artist's lifetime and later. The volume contains a catalogue of the watermarks found in Lucas van Leyden's prints in which all types have been reproduced true size from infrared photographs. For the first time the book illustrations after Lucas's designs have been described in detail.
Prints done in his manner bearing his monogram L have been listed as well as the many copies after Lucas van Leyden's prototypes, stressing once again the enormous impact his prints have had until long after his death.
